How to Remember Dreams

In order for you to remember your dreams so that you can symbolize them there are few things that you could do:

  • They best way to remember dreams is to record them immediately after they occur. So keep a pen and pad or even a tape recorder next to your bed and write down your dream down as soon as you awaken because you will most probably forget about it later on in the day
  • Try not to use an alarm clock in the morning as this disturbs your dream and means that you will not remember your dream as well as you can
  • However, to not use an alarm clock is quite difficult so a good idea might be to start your dream work on a weekend when you can lie in longer and awake naturally.
  • When you awake try to not open your eyes straight away. Just lie there and try to retrieve the images that were in your dream. If you can not picture the images then move into your favorite sleeping position. This may trigger some images that were in your dream
  • You may also find that the your dream seems silly and you do not want to write it down. Try not to do this and just write it down because even though it seems silly it probably wont be it will have some meaning.
  • Another good method to adopt is to tell yourself over and over, either during the day or just before you go to sleep that you will remember your dreams when you wake up. Or if you have a question you want answered repeat it in your mind several times so that it will be answered in your dream
  • When recording your dreams try to include as much detail as possible. answer the questions – Who, What, Where, When and How. For example, who was in the dream, what activity were you or others engaged in, where were you, was it day or night and how did you feel? Another thing that you should keep note of is how you felt when you woke up and what was your most dominant emotion?
  • Sometimes you may not remember a dream at all but something happens a couple of days or weeks later in the real world that triggers your memory and you end up remembering the dream. You must note down what event or experience triggered you to remember it because it may provide clues about the dream's significance.
  • Even though all of these methods help some people to remember their dreams, for some people these will not work and they will not remember their dreams no matter what. This main reason for this is that people are afraid to remember their dreams because they will tell you more than what you want to know. In these cases you must change your ideas about dreaming before you can start to explore and analyze them.
